Using keyboard shortcuts in the Player

The following table lists general keyboard shortcuts that you can use to select commands, buttons, and menus in the Player.

To do this

Use this keyboard shortcut

Make the underlined letter for a command or button available. The File menu is highlighted initially.

After you press the ALT key, press the key for the underlined letter of the menu or command that you want to use.

You can use either the arrow keys or key of the underlined letter to select a different menu or an item on the menu.

Access the Features taskbar features.

ALT, V, and then G

Move left and right or up and down on menus or lists

You can also use the arrow keys to adjust the volume and to position the Seek slider.

Play an item or select a command or button

ENTER or SPACEBAR

Select or clear a check box

To select or clear contiguous check boxes, press and hold SHIFT, use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate check boxes, and then press SPACEBAR

To select or clear check boxes for multiple items that are not contiguous, press and hold CTRL, use the arrow keys to highlight the check boxes, and then press SPACEBAR

Move the pointer to a different area

Press SHIFT+TAB to move the pointer in the opposite direction

Press CTRL+TAB to move the focus between the inner and outer areas of the Player

Display a shortcut menu for the selected item

Close any menu

Restore the Player from mini Player mode

Player controls keyboard shortcuts

The following table lists the keyboard shortcuts for the playback controls. These keyboard shortcuts may also be available when Windows Media Player is in skin mode, if they are supported by the skin.

The following table lists the keyboard shortcuts that are available in the Library feature.

Enable the option to add items to the List pane by double-clicking them

Play items in the Now Playing list repeatedly

Sort items in the list by name, artist, album, rating, or file name

ALT+L, and then S. Then use the arrow keys to select the information to sort by.

Edit items in the List pane by using the Edit Playlist dialog box

ALT+L, and then U

Create a new playlist or a new auto playlist in the List pane

ALT+L, and then N. Then use the arrow keys to select either a new playlist or new auto playlist.

Display the items in a playlist from your library in the List pane

ALT+L, and then E. Then use the arrow keys to select a playlist or open the Add to Playlist dialog box. Use the Edit by Using Playlist Editor command (ALT+L, and then U) to edit the playlist.

Save a playlist that you changed.

Save a new playlist that you created to your library

Rip keyboard shortcuts

The following table lists the keyboard shortcuts that are available in the Rip feature.

Show or hide the Album Information pane, which displays a Web page, provided by WindowsMedia.com, that helps you find and update information about the CD in the WindowsMedia.com database.

Show or hide the Media Information pane, which displays media information, provided by the currently selected online store, if one is available, about the CD. If no online stores are available in your area, the information is provided from a database hosted by WindowsMedia.com.

  • The Eject keyboard shortcut is not displayed and does not work if multiple CD-ROM or DVD drives are attached to the computer.
  • DVD commands are available only if you have a software decoder and hardware to support playing DVDs.
